Mr John M

I am a fully qualified, retired primary school teacher with a passion for maths, science, and technology. I am DBS Certified. I began my teaching degree and teacher training as a mature student, after working as a fully qualified carpenter and joiner through my teens and early twenties. During this time, I also spent three months in South Island New Zealand with Operation Raleigh. I believe this helped greatly, as It meant that I had some ‘Real-life experience’ before returning back to formal education. During my time at Cardiff University, I become fascinated by the Scandinavian approach to learning, which is very child-centric and child-driven, focusing on play and exploration in the early years, and although Swedish children start formal schooling a year or so later than their English counterparts, generally speaking by the age of 7, Swedish children have far higher levels of literacy and numeracy, not to mention a huge degree of self-confidence and an amazing ability to be self-motivating and drive.
