Hello! I’m Ria and I’m a qualified and experienced teacher and tutor of English Language (KS3, GCSE and A Level) English Literature (KS3 and GCSE) and Performing Arts/Drama (KS3 and GCSE). Originally from Cornwall, I’m currently teaching English and Drama at Ralph Allen School in Bath. The vast majority of my students achieve or exceed their ‘expected/target’ grades at GCSE. I’m very experienced in teaching students with SEND, particularly: dyslexia, ADD, and ADHD. Previously I have been an Assistant Head of House (pastoral and tutoring role). In my spare time I enjoy swimming, dancing, and indoor rock climbing!
I have recently returned from Sydney after teaching English in an independent high school in Sydney, Australia, where I worked for 9 years. I taught Years 7 to 12 (the oldest year) English HSC. Whilst there I was a Tutor, taking a group through from Year 7 to Year 12 and also an Academic Mentor, helping Year 12 students navigate the stresses of the HSC, being a shoulder to cry on and supporting them in their decisions about their future. Before that I worked in primary school in Weston-super-Mare in the UK for 5 years. I taught Years 3 & 4 and 5 & 6 in composite classes. I really enjoyed the flexibility to teach a variety of different subjects at primary level. I am also an English Examiner for the International Baccalaureate and really enjoy the breadth of study this curriculum allows.
An enthusiastic and committed English teacher, I have twenty years of experience teaching English Language and Literature in comprehensive schools where I was consistently judged to be an outstanding teacher. After leaving full time teaching to be with my daughter, I started tutoring on a part time basis, supporting children with additional needs and home schooled students as well as those looking for GCSE preparation. Seven years on, I now work with close to thirty students per year. In addition, I examine for AQA GCSE English Language on both papers. Within a week of the pandemic hitting in 2019, I moved online with my tutees, using a combination of Zoom and Google Docs. I continue to work successfully online with many of them but also travel to homes within the Bristol area. I currently have no availability for evening tuition but do have some capacity in the day time which would suit home schooled students.
