Michael J

PhD English, University of Leicester. MA (Distinction) Oxford Brookes University. BA (Hons) First Class, Loughborough University.

Member since 2019 Dr Michael J

I am a long-time teacher, lecturer, examiner and professional tutor with a patient, confidence-building approach. I have successfully taught at over ten schools, four major universities and hundreds of private students. I also hold qualifications in educational psychology and in supporting adult dyslexia. My approach is friendly, gentle and supportive but extremely professional. I aim to combine creative and emotionally engaging teaching with expert subject knowledge. At the heart of my tutoring is how important it is that a student believes in their own ability to learn and to progress. If there is one word I hear my students kindly use to describe my qualities it would be 'patience'. Yet I never feel like my patience is tested - I love the challenge of finding new, innovative ways to help them understand their subject. I enjoy music festivals, running and long walks with our dog Maple.

I also have experience as an examiner for the latest specifications, so can give specific, targeted and helpful guidance. I have taught English Literature and Language to the entire age and ability range and will personalise any programme to suit the individual needs of the student. I have been tutoring for years and have extensive experience with students from a range of backgrounds. Students have gone from being predicted Grade 3s to achieving Grade 7s. 100% of the students I tutor pass with flying colours, and over 70% have achieved Grade 7 or higher. I am friendly and very patient, and hope to make tuition an enjoyable experience for all my students.

Member since 2015 Mr Jeff H

The 20th of August 2020 was a very good day; I had several emails, texts and phone calls from my students (and their parents) because they had achieved quite remarkable results at A-level, GCSE and Entrance Exams. It is such a joy to know that those young people are on a path to success in such turbulent times. I love literature and have been teaching for 24 years across the age groups and abilities in the public and private sectors. I was Head of English at two independent colleges and have worked abroad teaching Business English to adults and EFL to foreign students. I have been an examiner for the AQA, and an OCR A-level moderator. Ofsted graded me 'outstanding' for instilling my pupils with a love of the written word. I have worked in a special school and had training in how to deal with autism, Asperger's, dyslexia, dyspraxia, etc. Recently I have been tutoring for the Common Entrance exams and helped a boy get into the prestigious Stowe School.
