All tutors are self-employed and should register this status with HMRC within 3 months of starting work as a tutor. The easiest way to register with HMRC is online.
Once you are registered as self-employed, you will be sent a Self Assessment Tax Return every year after the 5th April, which you can complete online and which will require you to declare your earnings for the previous year. Most tutors find this process relatively straightforward to do.
The deadline for a tax return by post is 31st October. If you complete the forms online, then you have until 31st January. A penalty of £100 can be given if you miss these deadlines.
